Five Legends Of Video Gaming

Gaming has come a long way in the past decade let alone the last 30yrs. As each year passes, new games are made available which shock audiences and gamers alike with high quality graphics and deep, detailed story lines. The gaming industry has become so big infact, that the recent big name game Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 smashed the record previously set by the movie Avatar and crossed the billion dollar mark in just 16 days. Do we need any more proof that games are now as popular as movies? With that in mind, lets have a look at five games which changed the face of gaming and set themselves as Legends of the Gaming industry.

Outrun was a racing game released by Sega in 1986. Played from a rear third person perspective the game revolutionized Racing games and was noted for its pioneering graphics and music, allowing the gamer to choose the music they wanted to listen to. Featuring a Ferrari Testarossa and it was followed by Turbo Outrun and was a massive hit not just on the arcades but also on several gaming platforms.

After Burner. How many of us remember this classic? Also created by Sega this 1987 Flight Simulator, like Outrun was a massive hit on the arcades with its sleek design. The game crossed over successfully to the gaming system version and sequels to the game were also released. The game allowed you to take control of an F-14 Tomcat Jet and battle your way through 18 levels against enemy Jets. The game set the bench mark for Flight Simulator games and gave rise to many aerial combat games but none were able to beat After Burner for sheer fun and game play.

Street Fighter undoubtedly was the game which changed two player fighting games. Making its debut in 1987 the franchise from Capcom has gone on to make billions of dollars in income and over 20yrs later is still going strong. The game pitted the best fighters from around the world, each with their own distinct moves and fighting styles against one another breaking ground in the fighting game genre. Street Fighter II was the first one-on-one fighting game to give players a choice from a variety of player characters with different moves, an option which created hitherto unknown levels of depth and replay value for an arcade game. Really only Mortal Kombat and Tekken have come close to challenging Street Fighters reign as the king of fighting games.

Super Mario Bros. This is the game which comes to mind when you think of platform games. Developed by Nintendo and released in 1985, like Street Fighter, Super Mario is still going strong and is considered by many as the defining character for Nintendo. For over 20yrs it was the best-selling video game of all time, simply put, without Super Mario, Nintendo would never have enjoyed its huge success and it’s no surprise Super Mario has featured on every single major Nintendo system. It is unlikely we will ever see a platform game as revolutionary as Super Mario Bros.

Call Of Duty. Well we’ve included four games and all four were from the 1980’s so its only fair we chose one from this century! Call Of Duty or COD as it is popularly known has gone from strength to strength, especially in its last three releases, Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops (you gotta love those Zombies!) and most recently the record-breaking Modern Warfare 3. Originally released for the PC in 2003 its success has carried over onto the major gaming platforms. The first person shooter has enjoyed increased success thanks to how it effortlessly translates to the online mode to allow gamers to enjoy it with others and take part in missions together. The depth of play and how it draws the gamer into really feel part of the action is what really sets it apart from other first-person shooting games. Battlefield 3 looks to be giving MW3 a run for its money but for the time being the Call of Duty franchise certainly has its bullet on target.
